Confidentiality and FOIP

A student’s disability is private information protected under FOIP and Human Rights Legislation.

FOIP, or the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, is a legislative framework in Canada that governs how public organizations handle personal information and provide access to public records. It ensures transparency in government operations while protecting individuals' privacy rights. FOIP legislation works in conjunction with Human Rights Legislation, which protects individuals from discrimination based on various grounds, including disability. This means that organizations must not only adhere to FOIP regulations but also ensure they do not discriminate against individuals with disabilities when handling their personal information or providing accommodations.
