Using Library Resources in Brightspace: Using e-books & documents

This site provides detailed instructions about using Library resources within the D2L Brightspace platform, as well as troubleshoots the most common access issues.

Method 1: Link to Item Record

The permalink allows you to link to the resource record within the library catalog.

  1. Search for your e-book using the search box on sait.ca/library.
  2. Select your e-book from the results list. If necessary, use the filters on the right side of the page to narrow your results.
  3. On the book page, click on the permalink icon on the right-hand toolbar. The permalink URL will display at the top of the record.
  4. Copy the permalink URL.  Remember, DO NOT copy and paste the URL from your browser's address bar as this will not produce a stable link.

  1. In your Brightspace course, go to Content, choose a location for the new content, and select Create> Create a Link.  Alternatively, you can select Create a File, and then add the link to the text box.
  2. Paste the link in the pop-up box URL field.

Method 2: Link Directly to e-Book

If the student does not need to see the ebook record, you can link directly into the ebook itself.

  1. Search for your e-book using the search box on sait.ca/library.
  2. Select your e-book from the results list. If necessary, use the filters on the right side of the page to narrow your results.
  3. On the book page, look for the phrase statement 'Click here for access' within the body of the record.  Right-click this link to copy the link location/shortcut.  Remember to always check that the URL begins with http://libresources.sait.ab.ca/login?url= ...

  1. In your Brightspace course, go to Content, choose a location for the new content, and select Create> Create a Link.  Alternatively, you can select Create a File, and then add the link to the text box.
  2. Paste the link in the pop-up box URL field.

Link Not Working?

Does your link begin with http://libresources.sait.ab.ca/login?url= If not, here's how to fix the issue:

A persistent link (permalink) is a direct URL that will remain stable over time and is found within the resource record.  You typically DO NOT use the URL found in the address bar at the top of your browser.

A proxy link is code that allows off campus access to library resources and is added before the persistent link to the resource (if not automatically included).  The library's proxy code looks like: http://libresources.sait.ab.ca/login?url= ...

If your link does not start with the proxy code, add that code to the front of the URL and check the new link in a browser. If you need any help adding the proxy code, check out the link helper page or contact your library liaison!
