  • Developing search strings;
  • Choosing appropriate search tools;
  • Finding grey literature and other "non-academic" sources;
  • Conducting preliminary research to determine the feasibility of your research approach;
  • Determining gaps in the research you have found;
  • Understanding academic articles, including interpreting results and identifying limitations;
  • Managing and organizing your research for your literature review;
  • Citing in APA format;
  • ...and anything else related to secondary research.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I have to choose something related to my degree?

A. Not necessarily, but it's always a good idea to do something that may help you in the future. There is lots of research out there in every discipline including marketing, supply chain management, accounting, construction project management, etc. Ultimately, you should choose a topic that interests you.

Q. I can't find articles! Do I need to change my research topic?

A. Connect with your librarian who can help you develop your search strategy. You are usually allowed to tweak your research question as you work through the course, but should try to keep within the same research topic once approved.

Q. How do I cite an academic article?

A. The following is the basic format for citing an academic article in APA. Note that you may not have every component (such as issue or doi):

Author Surname, First Initial. Second Initial. (Year). Article title: Subtitle. Periodical Title, Volume(issue), page range. doi if available

Q. How do I add SAIT Library to Google Scholar?

A. Look for the three bars in the top left corner. Click that, and then click "Settings" at the bottom of the side bar (with the gear icon). There, you will find "Library Links". You can search for SAIT or Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. Check our guide for more information about using Google Scholar.

Q. How do I request articles that are paywalled?

Submit a request through interlibrary loan.
