Geospatial Data Technology: Municipal Data

 The Community Data Program was created by the Canadian Council on Social Development and is made up of municipalities and public service and non-profit community organizations from across the country.  The program facilitates networking, training, and access to data to all its members.  As members of the Calgary branch, SAIT is able to access data, including Stats Canada Census data at member's customized geographies (such as communities and wards).

Data providers include:

Statistics Canada

Below are links to some of Statistics Canada's reference material.  These resources can help students to become more familiar with the vast data available through the Census Profile, the relationship between the standard dissemination geographies, and location of associated boundary files.  Students are encouraged to explore the full collection of data available through the Statistics Canada website.

Multiple cities around the country have made various types of spatial, economic, census, transportation, and infrastructure datasets available to the public.  Google the city name and "open data" to find useful sites.  Some of the Alberta cities with open data portals include:

You can also register at the Alberta Municipal Data Sharing Partnership to download roads, places, and addresses for Alberta municipalities.

SAIT students and faculty may request City of Calgary spatial data through the Reg Erhardt Library.  Data provided by the City of Calgary is for educational, non-commercial use only and requesters are required to sign a Data Release Agreement.  Below is a list of the datasets commonly used but other data may be requested.  Please contact the library for more information or email LibraryDataRequests@sait.ca
