Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL): Conducting SoTL Research

This curated guide provides resources and tools to help SAIT faculty explore, design, and share research on teaching and learning

Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) allows you to systematically explore questions about your teaching practice to enhance student learning, contribute to educational research in your field, and grow your professional profile.

✅  Beginning your project - a checklist:

  • Have a teaching and learning question in mind - what challenge or idea do you want to explore?
  • Review some literature on the topic - see the Literature Reviews page in the Library's faculty research guide for guidance or reach out to the Research and Instruction Librarian for support
  • Know the basics of research methods - consider appropriate ways to gather and analyze evidence and explore resources such as SAGE Research Methods to learn about possible options
  • Understand the ethical requirements - see the SAIT Research Ethics Board webpage for more information
  • Consider how you plan to share your project - see the Library's Publishing & Dissemination webpage or the Publishing & Sharing tab in this guide for ideas

✅  SoTL theory and methodology - recommended readings:

SAGE Research Methods

The Library's subscription to SAGE Research Methods is an invaluable tool in your research efforts. It provides a research planner to walk you through your proposal process, practice data sets for qualitative and quantitative analysis, handbooks and definitions for a wide variety of research methods, and more.

Join the SAIT SoTL Research Table

The SoTL Research Table provides an opportunity for participants to share SoTL works-in-progress and receive input and support from colleagues who are engaged in their own SoTL research projects. This response community welcomes new, emerging, and experienced SoTL researchers. The group meets monthly and also hosts guest researchers from across the country who speak on a variety of research-based topics.
