The National Building Code and derivatives (National Electrical, Energy, and Fire codes as well as Alberta versions of the codes) are available as a free download for personal use. The NRC has made it very easy, with a direct download option from their archive:

Building Standata The Alberta Municipal Affairs and the Safety Codes Council develop Alberta Building Code STANDATA. Some are issued under the authority of the code or the Safety Codes Act as provincewide variances or interpretations. Others are information bulletins that provide general advice on related matters.
